"Captain Anson (1697-1762) was given a fleet of eight ships to sail against the Spaniards after the outbreak of the War of Jenkin's Ear in 1739. He fought the Spanish in several battles on the west coast of America and did much damage to their commerce in Chile and Peru, although not without losses of his own. He eventually circumnavigated the world in the Centurion, the only surviving ship of his fleet, returning to England in 1744." Hill 72.
