Lifesize Roman Lead Left Foot

[ translate ]

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A lovely cast lead sculpture of a life-sized left foot with five lengthy toes and delineated toe nails. The top of the foot is smooth and exhibits shallow grooves indicative of the foot bones, and the hollow underside was perhaps filled with additional lead for weight or stability. This foot was perhaps meant as a votive offering to be left at an altar or temple, however its substantial weight suggests it may have been part of a larger statue. Size: 6.875" L x 4" W (17.5 cm x 10.2 cm).

Provenance: private New York, USA collection, purchased at Hermann-Historica, Munich, Germany, on April 17, 2010, lot 173; ex-private German collection

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#149717
Condition Report: Losses to back half and underside as shown. Minor nicks and abrasions to toes, top, peripheries, and base, with light softening to some finer details. Light earthen deposits throughout.
