Limoges, entourage of Leonard LIMOSIN or the Master of the workshop of the Passion of Christ.
Circa 1560.
"Crucifixion"
Extremely rare rectangular plate in enamelled copper.
Dim: 20 x 17 cm.
Restoration of a corner, some gaps.
On a black velvet display.
3.000 / 5.000 €
The scene shows Christ on the cross, surrounded by the two thieves with Saint John, Mary and Mary Magdalene mourning Christ, two soldiers in armour and on horseback seem distant from the drama that is being played out. At the foot of the cross, the Virgin Mary, lying down, weeps her pain.
In the distance, the ramparts and the city of Jerusalem appear on either side of Christ. In the background, we can see forests, groves, rocks and a starry sky.
This plaque reminds us of the Victorian and Albert Museum, made in 1539 by Léonard LIMOSIN. It is also noteworthy for its almost similar dimensions of 21.6 x 16cm (Inv. 2037:1.2-1855).
Let us also note a subject from the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Limoges, which has a large enamel, close to Master NB, whose plate shows the same scene and
the use of an almost similar colour palette.
The Master of the Passion of Christ presents figures with rounded shapes but his gold highlights are often more refined than our subject. Here they are very
erased although we can guess beautiful hair or beautiful gold highlights in the clothes. From this same workshop, was presented in April 2013, at Christie's, a small
plate with lot number 163. It is striking to note great technical similarities with our plaque.
