John Wilkes Booth
London, England, ca. 1865

Lincoln Assassin JW Booth CDV on a Fredericks Mount, Sold by London Bookseller Thomas Lacy
CDV

John Wilkes Booth CDV by C.D. Fredericks. 2.5" x 4". A three-quarter standing portrait of Booth, dressed in a dark suit and a winter overcoat. On a C.D. Fredericks mount, with a period identification at bottom of recto. Remarkable for the London bookseller's label affixed on verso that reads: "Lacy, Theatrical Bookseller / 89 Strand, London, W.C." Untrimmed, with sharp edges. Negligible soiling to verso, otherwise near fine.

The photograph was originally taken circa 1862 but was sold in London, presumably after President Lincoln's assassination. Booth never performed in London, making it probable that his infamy created as much of a demand for his image across the Atlantic as it did in America.

Thomas Hailes Lacy, the bookseller, moved his shop to 89 Strand in 1857. He remained there until selling out to his partner Samuel French in 1873.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
