Literary Works of Abraham Lincoln, Curry illustr. 1942

"The Literary Works of Abraham Lincoln", selected and Introduced by Carl Van Doren, illustrated by John Steuart Curry, Heritage Press Limited Edition, copyright 1942 Limited Editions Club.

This selection of writings are limited to what he wrote, not what was reported by others. Though Abraham Lincoln has a sure and lasting place in literary history, he seems - except for a few early verses - to have written always for particular occasions, with much thought of the wider or later fortunes of his words. The Gettysburg Address and the Second Inaugural are two masterpieces that affect national opinion directly and at once. They have survived in the national memory because he did more than he tried to do or knew he was doing.

John Steuart Curry (1897-1946) was an American painter whose career spanned the years from 1924 until his death. Along with Thomas Hart Benton and Grant Wood, he was hailed as one of the three great painters of American Regionalism of the first half of the twentieth century. Curry's artistic production was varied, including paintings, book illustrations, prints, and posters.
