Lodewijck van Boeckel (toeschrijving) - Ironwork mirror with roses
Impressive unique and rare mirror with a beautiful natural patina. Not signed by the artist. Lodewijk Van Boeckel (Lier, 16 January 1857 - 6 July 1944) was a Belgian art smith. As a student and largely self-taught, Van Boeckel managed to work his way up. With his successful participation in the Rubens competition exhibition, his fame really grew. Around 1900 on world level he was at the top. In that year he won the highest award at the World's Fair in Paris, in which 378 art smiths from all over the world participated. Van Boeckel mainly designed ornamental objects, often decorated with flowers and animals, but also chandeliers, banisters, fences, signs and bas-reliefs. His work belongs to the romantic period, although he already experimented with innovative (non-figurative) elements. The influence of Art Nouveau can also be found in his later works.
