Lokele People Woven Basketry Shield

North Central Democratic Republic of Congo (Tshopo Province): Lokele, So, Babali, Angba, or Boa people shield, ca. 1900. Woven cane in curved shape with wood board.
Curved shape with great profile. The rim is almost intact, which is very rare due to its fragility. Hardly visible two inch cut in upper center from a spear piercing through. Rare original carrying belt attached.
Another shield with identical vertical line pattern was donated to the American Museum of Natural
History in 1907 by the Belgian King (acc. no. 90.0/ 3847).

Condition Report: Crack in front and back from a spear, rim 98% perfect even at the base and top which is rare, gripboard and all the binding is perfect, extra belt on the gripboard.
