Stones with this name have a very intense blue color - even though the stones have almost no visible inclusions. The London Blue Topaz is a rather dark member of the topaz family and is more reminiscent of the dark waters of the ocean than of the bright summer sky.

The mineral topaz is an island silicate with the chemical composition Al2[6] [(F,OH) 2|Si. O4] . The fluorine (F) and hydroxide ions (OH) indicated in the round brackets can represent each other in the formula (substitution, diadochy) , but are always in the same proportion to the other components of the mineral.
