TLS
A scarce typed letter from film producer Leon Schlesinger (1884-1949), known for his work in creating Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies. 1p, measures 8.5" x 11", Hollywood, CA, June 27, 1938. Signed at conclusion in black fountain pen, "Leon Schlesinger", and written on attractive studio letterhead that features an embossed header and both cartoon's iconic logos in the left margin. The phrase, "That's All Folks", is similarly printed along the bottom edge. Exhibits darkened toning to top and right sides, with moderate creasing and small intermittent tears to the same. Two areas of prior mounting present at left, not affecting overall appearance. Good to fair overall.
From the collection of Joseph "Bill" Kahn, Jr. Mr. Kahn began collecting as a boy; writing to notables requesting their autographs. Our October auction includes signatures obtained by him over many decades, including such notables as Amelia Earhart, Babe Ruth, and Lou Gehrig.
In full:
"In today's mail I received a card from you on which you expressed your appreciation of three of my cartoons.
Let me at this time thank you for taking time to express your appreciation."
After parting ways with animation studio Harman and Ising in 1933, Schlesinger founded his own on the Warner Brothers lot on Sunset Boulevard. He scouted talented animators away from other studios, including Friz Freleng, who was promoted to oversee the production of Looney Tunes and its sister series Merrie Melodies. Schlesinger later hired composer Carl Stalling and voice actor Mel Blanc, and collectively these men would create such famous characters as Porky Pig, Daffy Duck, and Bugs Bunny.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
