This elegantly engraved pair of maps show the North and South Poles. The map of the North Pole features some nice topographical detail, especially in northern Europe and Asia. Detail is sparse in northwestern North America, with no sign of Alaska. There are partial coastlines in the Pacific Northwest with an elongated L di Fonte that connects the Pacific to Hudson Bay through the La Gran Acqua dei Selvaggi (the great water of the savages). The map of the South Pole shows the routes of various explorers, including Abel Tasman, Captain Furneaux, Captain Cook, and Edmond Halley. Clusters of tiny islands are shown, as well as a few partial coastlines. The map includes the tips of Tierra del Fuego and South America, Tasmania, and New Zealand.
