Lot of 2 Chancay Polychrome Textile, Fiber & Wood Dolls

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A wonderful pair of handmade dolls with slender wooden dowels comprising their inner structures, natural plant fibers creating their hair, and tightly-woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers forming their clothes. The shorter doll has a minimalist presentation with branching fingers and toes, a bushy brown-hued vestment, and a simple rectangular head with two enormous bangs draped to the sides. The taller figure has a coarse brown dress cinched with a three-colored belt, elongated fingers, and a cotton scarf. The expressive visage presents with diamond-shaped eyes, a slender mouth, a red-painted face, and a braided headband wrapped around slender locks of hair. Size of largest (three-color belt): 5.25" W x 8" H (13.3 cm x 20.3 cm).

Provenance: private Tucson, Arizona, USA collection, acquired between 1950 and 1985
