Lot of 2 Chimu Gilt Brass & Silver Tupus w/ Zoomorphs

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, central coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A fine pair of mold-cast tupus used as pins for clothing or coiffures, each with a narrow, needle-form body surmounted by a pair of highly stylized zoomorphs. The first tupu is formed from 85% silver and features a tapered lower tip as well as two mirrored reptilian creatures. The taller tupu is formed from gilt brass and depicts two minimalist birds on top of the uniform pin body. Size of largest (birds): 6.125" L x 1.625" W (15.6 cm x 4.1 cm); quality of silver: 85%

Provenance: private Colgate, Wisconsin, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to 1990s; ex-Roger Peterson collection, Delavan, Wisconsin, USA

Condition Report: Larger tupu has repair to back feathers of one bird, and smaller tupu has both creatures reattached atop pin, both with light adhesive residue along break lines. Both pieces have slight bending to overall forms, with softening to some finer details, and light encrustations. Great patina throughout.
