Lot of 2 Chimu Textile Fragments - Squids & Serpents

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A fine ensemble of two textile fragments comprised of tightly-woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in hues of wheat, espresso, fuchsia, crimson, and beige. The first fragment features a trio of abstract squids with bi-pronged heads, a single cyclopean eye, and curling tentacles, with a tiered columnar form next to the outermost tentacle tips. The second textile fragment displays a series of paired serpents with heads coiled around one another, serrated scales, and slender bodies with seemingly endless tails. A lovely pair exemplifying Chimu textile artistry! Mounted inside a display frame. Size of largest (squids): 2.625" W x 6.25" H (6.7 cm x 15.9 cm); size (frame): 10.125" W x 8.125" H (25.7 cm x 20.6 cm).

Provenance: private Ventura County, California, USA collection, acquired in the 1980s to 1990s

Condition Report: Both items are fragments of larger textile compositions. Both items have light fraying to some peripheral threads, with minor staining, otherwise intact and very good. Iconography and pigmentation is still visible and clear.
