Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. An endearing pair of hand-built terracotta whistles, both rendered as bird effigies with carefully applied and/or incised wings, beaks, and tailfeathers, as well as expressive wide-eyed visages topped by plumage. Two delightful musical instruments from the Colima of West Mexico! Size of largest (raised wings): 2.4" L x 2.5" W x 3.6" H (6.1 cm x 6.4 cm x 9.1 cm)

Provenance: private Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA collection; ex-Minerva Gallery; ex-Benjamin Vega, California, USA, acquired in 2006 to 2007; ex-Gene and Virginia George, brought to the USA from 1961 to 1966

Condition Report: Smaller whistle has restoration to tip of mouthpiece, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines; larger whistle is intact and very good. Both items have minor abrasions and encrustations, with fading to original pigment, and light softening to some finer details. Nice earthen deposits and remains of original pigment throughout. Larger whistle produces a nice sound; smaller whistle produces no sound.
