Lot of 2 Greek Blackware Oil Lamps, ex-Bonhams

Ancient Greece, Classical to Hellenistic Period, ca. 4th to 2nd century BCE. A wonderful gathering of mold-formed pottery oil lamps covered in a lustrous layer of black glaze. The first lamp has a circular body with a concave base, a rounded shoulder, and a protruding wick spout. The largest lamp is squat in form with a wide circular base, an open oil basin, and a narrow wick spout. Size of largest (open basin): 2.875" W x 3.75" H (7.3 cm x 9.5 cm).

Provenance: private Davis collection, Houston, Texas, USA; ex-Bonhams, London, Knightsbridge Antiquities Auction (May 8, 2013, part of lot 96); ex-private English collection formed in the 1970s, thence by descent

Condition Report: Smallest lamp repaired from multiple pieces with some restoration and adhesive residue along break lines. Largest lamp repaired from multiple pieces with loss to original handle and light adhesive residue along break lines. All items have surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, fading and loss to areas of glaze, and small nicks to wick spouts and bases. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
