Lot of 2 Maya Polychrome Jars
Pre-Columbian, Mexico or Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A nice set of hand-built pottery bowls, each presenting a unique design and painted decorations. First is a spherical vessel with a stable base, a corseted shoulder, and an inward-slanting rim that perhaps held a lid at one time. Red linear and spiraling motifs adorn the cream-hued exterior, and a large bullseye motif is shown within the basin. The second vessel bears a round but stable base, a tall shoulder, and a gently flared rim. Its exterior surfaces are embellished with red and black motifs that - while worn - perhaps depicted figures or glyphs at one time. Size of largest (tall shoulder): 5.25" W x 4.25" H (13.3 cm x 10.8 cm)

Condition Report: Shorter vessel has several stable fissures along rim and body, and both vessels have extensive abrasions, nicks, and fading to pigment, otherwise intact and very good. Light remains of pigment and nice earthen deposits throughout.
