**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Panama, Veraguas, ca. 500 to 1100 CE. A pair of once wearable pendants. One, representing a bat god, is made from tumbaga (gold 57%, copper 40%), and was created by the lost wax casting technique using a high copper-gold alloy enriched at the surface with high karat gold soon after the casting process ended. The other is a 77% gold (equivalent to 18K+) pendant in the form of a zoomorphic profile head - possibly a caiman - with a huge curled nostril, a large eye, and a wide leg underneath the head. Tumbaga bat: 2.9" W x 1.55" H (7.4 cm x 3.9 cm); weight: 15.4 grams; gold: 1.4" W x 1.05" H (3.6 cm x 2.7 cm); weight: 11.9 grams; total weight of both: 27.4 grams

Provenance: ex-Craig Hendrix collection, South Carolina, USA; ex-Charles Craig Jr. collection, Costa Rica, acquired in the 1960s and 1970s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#154093
Condition Report: Tumbaga is missing its lower tailfeathers and one side of its wings. Rich patina on surface and slight bending to form. Gold is missing its back and upper ends. What remains has very nice detail.
