LOT 0031

Lot of 2 Roman Lead Slingshot Bullets w/ Inscription

[ translate ]

**First Time At Auction**

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. Two hefty lead slingshot bullets; one almond shaped and the other faceted with pointed ends. The smaller has an indecipherable relief inscription and carving on both sides, as it was a popular practice for soldiers to carve curses or insults on the bullets for their targets. These small projectiles could be deadly, and Virgil wrote a colorful description of their destructive force; hopefully not an event he witnessed in close range! Size of largest: 1.875" L (4.8 cm)

Provenance: ex-Estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#158528
Condition Report: Tip is worn down on smaller bullet. Surface wear and nicks as expected with age and use to both. Faint inscription on one!
