Lot of 3 Chancay & Chimu Textile Fragments, Copper Tupu

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE; Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A fine gathering of three ancient Peruvian artifacts. First is a Chimu tupu pin, shaped from a copper-silver alloy, with a tiered knob handle and a slender, tapering body. Second is a tightly-woven Chimu textile fragment displaying abstract anthropomorphic figures enclosed by tight corkscrews in hues of cream and coffee. Third is a Chancay textile fragment with ten diagonal registers of abstract avian figures, each boasting a petite body and a wide-eyed head, in hues of wheat, fuchsia, and chocolate. Size of largest (Chancay): 6.875" W x 12.375" H (17.5 cm x 31.4 cm).

Provenance: private Probst collection, Monterey, California, USA, acquired in the mid-1970s to mid-1990s; ex-HD Enterprises, Inc., Denver, Colorado, USA; ex-Gunnulf Bjorkman collection, Sweden and Argentina, acquired in Peru in the 1950s and 1960s

Condition Report: Each textile is a fragment of a larger item. Tupu pin has slight bending to overall form, otherwise intact and very good. Both textiles have light fraying and loosening to some interior and peripheral fibers, and light staining and fading to original coloration. Iconography and colors of textiles are still vivid.
