Lot of 3 Roman Bronze Crossbow Fibulae

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A lovely set of three cast-bronze fibula brooches of classic 'crossbow' forms. The shortest has a dramatically curved body with a curved foot and a slender pin protruding from the verso. The second brooch has a similar form as the shortest with exposed coils that form the pin as well as a tab-shaped pin latch on the bottom. The largest fibula has a carinated midsection, a bulb-form foot, a triangular pin latch, and a thin pin that still articulates. Each brooch exhibits fine green and brown patina evocative of ancient Rome! Size of largest (articulated pin): 0.8" W x 2.125" H (2 cm x 5.4 cm).

Provenance: ex-estate of Roy Green, Birmingham, Alabama acquired before 2015 from major New York galleries

Condition Report: Pin of largest fibula still articulates, but only slightly. Shortest brooch has loss to small area of pin latch. All items have minor abrasions to bodies and pins, and light encrustations. Nice earthen deposits and great patina throughout.
