Subject: United States
Period: 1858-60 (circa)

A. The United States of North America, by SDUK, dated 1860, hand color (14.9 x 12.4"). A detailed map of the pre-Civil War United States showing evolving territorial configurations in the west. Arizona now occupies the southern half of New Mexico Territory, Utah is in its largest extent, and Nebraska Territory occupies the region between the Continental Divide and the Missouri River. Oregon and Washington extend to the Rockies. Condition: Original outline color. (A+)

B. United States, by John Rapkin, circa 1860, black & white (16.7 x 10.6"). This map was also issued just prior to the Civil War and presents nice territorial development. Nebraska Territory is beginning to take shape, and a large Dakota above it spans the region from the Rockies to the Missouri River. Washington Territory is shown in its inverted "L" shape, while Arizona occupies the southern part of New Mexico Territory. The map shows the Missouri Compromise line in the west. Condition: Issued folding with a hint of light toning along the sheet edges. (A)

C. Stati Uniti dell' America Settentrionale, by G. Bonatti, circa 1858, hand color (9.9 x 7.2"). This small Italian map includes the large territories of Utah, New Mexico, and Oregon to the west of the Rocky Mountains. An unusual feature is the description of the land between the Rockies and the Missouri River, which is "Territori Tuttora Posseduti dai Seuvagi" or “Territories Still Owned by the Savages.” Condition: Issued folding with light scattered foxing. (B+)
