[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $600**

Ancient Seas, North America, Western United States, Oklahoma, Haragan Formation, Devonian period, ca. 416 to 359.2 million years ago. A wonderful collection of four sandstone matrices each containing fossilized trilobites. The first is a trio of these prehistoric sea bugs all in enrolled positions. Enrolling was the trilobites' method of protection against predators to protect their soft underbellies, much like present day pill bugs (rollie pollies). The next two matrices contain three enrolled trilobites. The last matrix has been prepared to show one trilobite which is nearly fully excavated and positioned vertically above a second trilobite emerging from below. The largest trilobite is probably a species of Reedops decker, while the rest are probably Kainops raymondi. Enrolled trilobites are an interesting look into the defenses of these creatures that were often preyed upon by larger animals. Size of matrix w/ three fossils: 4" L x 2.5" W x 0.75" H (10.2 cm x 6.4 cm x 1.9 cm)

Lucite stand for photography purposes only.

Provenance: ex-Stein collection, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, USA, acquired prior to 2010

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to recent increases of shipments being seized by Australian & German customs (even for items with pre-UNESCO provenance), we will no longer ship most antiquities and ancient Chinese art to Australia & Germany. For categories of items that are acceptable to ship to Australia or Germany, please contact us directly or work with your local customs brokerage firm.

#164103
Condition Report: Professionally prepared and excavated. Reedops has great texture, minor abrasions, and dark discoloration on underside. Kainops: one is mounted on the matrix with adhesive which is well done with no visible adhesive. The kainops with three trilobite: 2 are reattached and mounted to matrix. The fully excavated trilobite is repaired. Body reattached from two pieces, visible adhesive within break line. The fossil is then reattached to the matrix. Great, dynamic presentations on all!
