Ancient Greece, Attic, ca. 5th to 4th century BCE. A set of 4 wheel-thrown pottery drinking vessels known as skyphoi, each with a deep basin and a pair of projecting handles. Each skyphos is covered in lustrous black glaze that is a decorative staple of fine Attic pottery, indicating that these were perhaps intended as high-quality funerary offerings. Size of largest: 5.5" L x 8.125" W x 2.8" H (14 cm x 20.6 cm x 7.1 cm)
Provenance: Private West Hollywood, California, USA collection, acquired at auction; ex-private old Maryland, USA collection, acquired in the early 1990s
