LOT 1143

Louis Haghe (1806-1885, Belgian)

[ translate ]

"The Duke Andre Dandolo Departing for the Crusade from St. Mark's Cathedral, Venice," 1863
Watercolor and gouache, faintly squared in pencil for transfer, on paper under glass
Appears unsigned; titled and dated from labels affixed to the back board
Sight: 50.75" H x 42.75" W

Notes: George Redford's two volume publication, "Art Sales 1626-1887: A History of Sales of Pictures and other Works of Art," published in London in 1888, includes what appears to be this large watercolor. It is described on page 156 as "Dandolo Leaving St. Mark / 51 x 43" within a section devoted to the auction results for roughly 80 different watercolors by Haghe. "T. Blackburn" is listed as the consignor. Apparently the piece did not sell during the auction in 1865 (i.e. "Bt. in." printed in the buyer column is probably short for "bought in"), however, the 477 pounds and 15 shillings figure recorded at that time was the second highest amount for any of Haghe's watercolors auctioned between 1860 and 1884. In present day terms, that amount equates to nearly $60,000.
Condition Report: Generally good condition. Occassional very minor and unobtrusive flaking of the varnish. The paper of the lower right corner skillfully patched, presumably by the hand of the artist. Not examined out of the frame.

Frame: 59" H x 51" W x 2" D
