Louis Michel Eilshemius (American, 1864-1941)

Dream
Signed and dated "EilshemiuS -1918-" lower left, titled on a gummed label affixed to the back of the frame and in an inscription on an old frame backing.
Oil on heavy pressed paperboard, 22 1/4 x 29 1/2 in. (56.5 x 74.5 cm), framed.
Condition: Reverse with two landscape studies in various rectangular shapes, old retouch to recto, toning to the paperboard, possible repair to lower right corner of the reverse.
Estimate $2,500-3,500

Framed dimensions are 29 1/2 x 37 x 1 1/2 inches.

The label referenced above was apparently updated by Solomon Fleischman, one of the painting's early owners who identified himself by signing the bottom of the label. It appears, however, that the label was from the original purchaser, whose name is indistinctly written, along with the title, in ink above Fleischman's signature. The original owner reported that he knew the artist well and bought this painting directly from Eilshemius at his 57th Street residence in 1937. The original owner also inscribed this information on an old backing paper from the frame in a note dated 3/2/45.

There is a small horizontal tear near the center of the left edge measuring approximately 1 inch. The support is somewhat brittle and there are small losses near the upper and lower left corners. There are scattered stains to the reverse.

Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging. Any condition statement given, as a courtesy to a client, is only an opinion and should not be treated as a statement of fact. Skinner shall have no responsibility for any error or omission.
