Louis Willem van Soest (1867-1948) - Brücke an einer winterlichen Gracht

[ translate ]

Louis Willem van Soest (Poerworedje 5 April 1867 - 11 March 1948 The Hague) originally studied chemistry in Aachen. He only began painting in the 1890s, and was self-taught. He received inspiration from the brothers Jakob and Willem Maris and Jan Hendrik Weissenbruch, with whom he was friends. From 1894 onwards he worked alternately in The Hague, Velp and Wassenaar. The painter had longer working stays in Wiesbaden and Paris. He received several awards, including gold medals in Amsterdam in 1903 and in Munich in 1905. He also became known as Princess Wilhelmina's drawing teacher.

The painting shows a winter mood in a Dutch city, possibly also in Belgium, as a group of Beguines are depicted. In this case, Bruges or Mechelen come into question.

The painting is painted in oil on Malkerton, then mounted on canvas. It is in immaculate condition. It is simply but neatly framed, the frame shows only minor signs of age.
Image size without frame: 36. 5 x 43cm
