Masted ships and other vessels off the coast in a calm
Signed, oil on canvas, 68.5cm by 119cm
See illustration
In an overall good state of preservation. There has been an amount of relatively minor and sporadic retouching throughout the sky. There has been slightly more concentrated retouching along the horizon centre and in an around the ships. With a further more notable patch approx 5 cm above the horizon and 10 cm from far left hand side approx 3 cm in diameter. The lower edge of the largest vessel has been strengthened with a further patch of over painting approx 4 cm beneath this in the water. A further comparable patch in the water behind the second rowing boat. Some of this retouching has deteriorated and is visible with the naked eye. Covered with a relatively thick layer of discoloured dirt and varnish. Retains good brushwork and impasto.
