Lovely Huari Polychrome Textile Sash

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Huari (Wari) culture, ca. 700 to 1000 CE. A finely woven and braided sash comprised of tightly-woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in vivid hues of red, rose, brown, and black. The sash presents with an attractive design of intricate geometric patterns centering on star-like motifs, and a thick pair of braided cords curve around the rectangular body. Mounted against a fabric display panel. Size (textile): 14.25" W x 38.25" H (36.2 cm x 97.2 cm); size (display fabric): 35.25" W x 57" H (89.5 cm x 144.8 cm).

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, acquired in the 1950s
