PROVENANCE: Private Collection, Cornwall. The current owner's mother, Barbara Brown, was secretary at the Leach Pottery from 1963 to 1967. Barbara worked closely with Bernard and Janet Leach and lived in the Leach's flat at Barnaloft with her husband and her daughter, Amanda, when she was very young for nearly a year. A photograph from around 1966 shows Barbara, with her young daughter in her arms, at the Leach Pottery with Bernard Leach, Hamada Shoji and Janet Leach, alongside others working at the Leach Pottery at the time. This work by Hans Coper and a bowl by Lucie Rie (Lot ) were both purchased during this time. Both Rie and Coper were shown at the opening of The New Craftsman Gallery, founded by Janet Leach in St Ives in 1965. Barbara was given this Hans Coper by her husband to celebrate the birth of their daughter in December 1965. It has been kept by the family and gifted to Amanda on her 21st birthday and has remained in her care since that time.
