Ludwig Fahrenkrog (German, 1867 - 1952)
"The Ecstasy of St. Cecilia", 1885. Oil on canvas mounted to board, after the original altarpiece by Raphael, signed and dated lower right corner, in painted wood frame, overall 21 ¼" x 15".
Done when the artist was 18 years old, this painting depicts Saint Cecilia, the patron saint of musicians and Church music, listening to a choir of angels in the company of St. Paul, St. John the Evangelist, St. Augustine and Mary Magdalene, after the famous altarpiece by High Renaissance artist Raphael. Classically trained, Ludwig Fahrenkrog began his career early, eventually teaching at the Berlin Royal Art Academy and the School of Arts and Crafts in Bremen, eventually developing his own Art Nouveau style.
Condition: Overall good, minor areas of craquelure, mounted to board, with minor inpainting visible under UV light, frame abrasions to perimeter, minor pigment flaking.
