Description: The colonnade around the paradise garden of the Romanesque church Maria Laach is a place of peace. Likewise, as our watercolour suggests, the strong masonry with the richly decorated Romanesque capitals of the so-called "Samson Master" provides shade and a pleasant coolness even in the greatest summer heat. Our representation also conveys the impression of the contrasting pair of light and shadow as well as heat and coolness through the dark design of the cloister and the bright sunshine that shines in through the window from the little garden of paradise.
