Ludwig Mies van der Rohe - Chair (3) - Barcelona chair

2 vintage Barcelona Chairs + 1 vintage Ottoman Footstool designer : Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (°27. 03. 1886 Germany - +17. 08. 1969 US) - "Less is More" - awarded by Museum of Modern Art, N. Y. - 2 Barcelona chairs : - elegant heavy chrome-plated glossy structure - of a single piece - polished and finished by hand with mirror finish. (very labour-intensive and expensive - at the time a completely new process in furniture manufacturing) - size : 75x75x75cm - height : 35 cm (frame without cushions) - cushions are padded with 40 single cut panels, welded by hand with a white (goatskin ?) - leather. - 17 white leather strips in good condition. - chair and backrest cushions match the curve of the frame. - side and edges of the buckles (upholstery) are tinted to match the specific color 1 Ottoman footstool : - size : H. 30cm - L. 58cm - B. 53 cm (frame, without cushion) - 7 brown leather strips in good condition. - elegant heavy chrome-plated glossy structure - of a single piece - polished and finished by hand with mirror finish. - traditional scissor construction - cushion has suffered a lot (see pictures) history : - these 3 chairs were first with my grandparents (born in the early 20th. C) - later at our home - so I knew them during my full childhood years. - the original cushions do not have the monogram Knoll, (if our information is correct on cushions, produced after 1969) - Knoll obtained the exclusive rights to manufacture the Barcelona Chair since 1947 - built a new version - the frame no longer consisted of several parts, but was made from one piece (no hairline joints) and commercialized from 1948, (only marked in frame since 1996) - the filling of the cushions was also changed, the first original one filled with horsehair, later by Knoll with latex foam, which is the case here. - this cult object with its secrets of construction was probably purchased long before 1969 - used as furniture in our private homes, with signs of use and age, but which makes it vintage classics and a real age-feeling. - 2 pins UNDER the leather strip to attach back cushion used since 1932 (see pictures) - later by Knoll with a push button on the leather strip. - the back cushions are in much better condition than the seat cushions, have suffered - new leather cushions (color of your choice) can be ordered on the internet, per set (2 pieces) from 139 €. - time period attribution is based on family memories, the book (‘Mies van der Rohe by Herman Van Bergeijk a. o. - Skira - Vitra - Design Museum) and research - hopefully accurate. - pictures are an integral part of the description. - picking up in Brussels is required.
