Beschreibung: Ludwig Vogel (1810 Hildburghausen - 1870 Tambach), Albanian mountains in the Campagna Romana, 19th century, oil on paper

Technique: Oil on paper, mounted on cardboard
Size: 11,4 x 18,7 cm | 4 1/2 x 7 1/3 in

Condition: Overall very good condition. The sheet partially detaches from the backing. Isolated insignificant colour faults.

Description: The signature on another picture from the group of works presented here points to the Thuringian painter Ludwig Vogel (1810-1870), who worked in Rome from 1837-1846, as the author of our works, and not to the Swiss co-founder of the Luke League, Georg Ludwig Vogel, who worked there from 1810-1813. From Rome Ludwig Vogel, who was born in Hildburghausen and was accompanied by his brother Heinrich from 1844-45, sent landscapes, genre paintings and portraits to the Dresden art exhibition in 1838. He was also represented at the exhibitions of the Berlin Academy in 1842, 44 and 48. Before his return to Altenberg Vogel must have enjoyed the counter-world of the German artists' community in Rome, for he took an active part on several occasions in the satirical artists' festivals of the Ponte Molle and pictorially recorded the Cervaro festival, which continued to be cultivated after the founding of the German artists' association in 1845.
