Luigi Voltolina (1942) - Giorno del Giudizio

[ translate ]

AUTHOR

Luigi Voltolina (1942) Italian painter. Born in Vlora in Albania, to Venetian parents, he returned to Venice in 1944. Cousin of Pino Ponti, one of the protagonists of the Milanese "Corrente" movement, he graduated from the Voltolina Institute of Art in Venice and in 1958 won the first institutional prize, working in the meantime in the F. lli Toso glass factory in Murano.

In '63 he had his first solo exhibition at the Galleria Venezia. Emilio Vedova, Virgilio Guidi and Vittorio Basaglia established relationships in the city, also creating relationships with the Milanese scene and its protagonists such as Remo Brindisi and Gabriele Mucchi. In 1967 he was selected together with other Italian artists for a collective exhibition at the Worness Gallery in New York.

In '75 he participated in the Quadrennial of Ro, in '84 he exhibited in Madrid in the halls of the Italian Embassy. The Spanish city overturns the style by giving new stimuli, focusing research on abstract and informal themes. In '94, invited by the Archbishop of the city, he exhibited again in New York where he now created stable links with various galleries and exhibition spaces, collaborations that resulted in shows and exhibitions that linked the artist to the city even in the following decades. In 2023 he received a lifetime achievement award from the city of Venice.

DESCRIPTION

"Judgment Day", oil on canvas, 50x40cm, 1973, signed lower left, signed and titled on the reverse. The protagonists of the scene are a horse and a rider identifiable as one of the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse, characters linked to the end of time according to biblical tradition. The horse appears wildly raised on its hind legs, while the rider takes his hand off the reins, apparently bringing his left arm to protect his face, while in his right hand he holds a scythe.

The vibrant chromaticism of the background played on the combination of blue and purple fills the scene with pathos. The horse and rider instead appear in the chromatic combination of aqua green and orange tones, giving them great liveliness and a visual impact of an almost illustrative nature. The game is subtle whereby the Horseman of the Apocalypse, instead of appearing terrible and determined in his destructive mission, as in his classic iconography, appears here himself frightened by the day of final judgement. The author's training shines through in the rendering of the volumes, exuding a certain figurative Futurism of which Nello Voltolina, Luigi's cousin and initial teacher, was an exponent.

CONDITION REPORT

The general condition of the work is good, it appears intact in all its parts with clearly legible original colours. Slight signs of aging scattered like small scratches on the upper part (see photo) but overall no problem.

Tracked and insured shipping with adequate packaging.
