Luristan Bronze Master-of-Animals Standard

The body with arms held out to hold off two mythological creatures. The second face flanked on either side by an eagle head, the lower face above the haunches set on a human body, set in a bottle-shaped base with long cylindrical neck. The finials and standards have been interpreted in almost as many ways as the number of scholars who have written about them. They have been called deity standards (Rostovtzeff 1931a, 49) , protectors of troups (A. Goddard 1931, 82ff, 100, 1962, 37) , household cult idols (Potratz 1955b, 28-Moorey 1971a, 142) , totem symbols (Najel 1963, 56-De. Waele 1982, 114) . they have also been considered to be pole tops (Frankfurt 1955, 211) , or chariot fittings (Przeworski 1940, 259) .
