Luristan Copper Cylindrical Mace Head

Ancient Near East, northwestern Iran, Luristan, ca. 1000 to 600 BCE. A cast-copper cylindrical mace head made to be hafted atop the end of a wooden or metal staff. The body has repeating columns of decorative hemispherical nodules between columns of rounded zigzags, and the lower shaft is embellished with two groups of raised rings above the flared base. Bronze Age Luristan art was the work of nomadic herdsmen and horsemen who crafted small, portable objects, including daggers, swords, and other weapons. Weapons and related copper objects like this example would almost certainly have been made as grave offerings in the small tombs in which their owners were buried. Condition Report: Minor abrasions and nicks to mace head and body, with encrustations within most recessed areas, and chipping to patina, otherwise intact and very good. Great mottled green and brown patina throughout.
