Luristan Leaded Bronze Finial w/ Three Faces

[ translate ]

Ancient Near East, Iran, Luristan, ca. 1000 to 600 BCE. A leaded-bronze hollow cylindrical form with three anthropomorphic faces - one on each side; bulging eyes, prominent curved noses, slight smiles, and pointed chins outlined by a granulated beard. A raised bezel rises above their shared head and the shaft extends below the chins to a base with relief rings and notches. The three faces perhaps represent a belief similar to the god Janus, a powerful figure able to look in all directions at once. This finial was part of a larger staff and perhaps used in a religious procession. This said, its true function is unknown. Interpretations have ranged from displaying religious depictions of deities for celebrations or funerals, to beautiful utilitarian pieces, such as parts of chariots. A fine example of Luristan artistry with wonderfully preserved details and gorgeous patina. Size: 1" W x 4.25" H (2.5 cm x 10.8 cm); 5.125" H (13 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-Phoenicia Holyland Antiquities, New York, New York, USA; ex-Arte Primitivo Gallery, New York, New York, USA; ex-Henry Anavian collection, acquired in the 1990s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
