Lyonel Feininger (1871-1956) 'Insel' Colored Litho

Item/Description: 19th Century Colored Lithograph by German-American artist, Lyonel Feininger depicts tall masted ships sailing on the Baltic Sea, an Insel ( island in German) in the background. Abstract, Cubist, dynamic work. Framed and set against gauze like matting, nautical in appearance. Artist signed lower left: " Feininger- insel ". Numbered lower right: 18 / VI / 33.
Lyonel Feininger was born in New York City. At age 16, he traveled to Germany to study art under masters including Ernst Hancke. Favored Expressionist style. Marine settings such as islands and shorelines off the Baltic Sea were often the inspiration of his early works.
He exhibited extensively and also taught at the Bauhuas School. When the Nazi Party came to power in 1933, Feininger's works were declared as "degenerate." He and his wife moved to America where he continued to work and his career flourished. His works can be found in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., and the Kunstmuseum Basel, among others

Condition Art: Very Good. Image and colors are crisp. Yellowing and areas of foxing to paper, some wrinkling along top border.

Age: 1933.
