PORTRAIT OF ANNE ARCHBOLD
Oil on canvas

Catalogue note:
The daughter of millionaire Acme Oil Company founder John Dustin Archbold, Anne Archbold was an influential heiress, sportswoman and philanthropist. She married Irishman Armar Dayrolles Saunderson in 1906, and the couple purchased an estate called Foxlease in Hampshire, England. The marriage was rocky and Anne divorced Armar in 1922. Anne retained ownership of Foxlease in the divorce, but gifted it to Princess Mary, who, in line with Archbold's wishes, presented the estate as a trust to the Girl Guides scouting program. The Girl Guides organization used Foxlease as a training and operations center from 1922 until 2023.

Archbold moved to Washington, D.C., purchasing 60 acres of land on Reservoir Road, west of Georgetown. She hired pioneering female architect Josephine Wright Chapman to design her new home, a lavish Spanish-style estate she named Hillendale. Archbold joined the National Women's Party and advocated for the Equal Rights Act. She frequently donated money to hospitals in the Washington, D.C. area and beyond. In 1924, she joined fellow philanthropist Charles Carroll Glover in donating over 100 acres of land National Capital Parks commission. In the 1950s, Anne filed an injunction against District Commissioners who wanted to build a highway through the land, saying, "It was my purpose that the beautiful wooded valley be preserved perpetually for the benefit and pleasure of the public. It should remain and be enjoyed by all as a natural sanctuary." The right-of-way to the land was transferred to the National Parks Service, and remains as Glover Archbold Park in Northwest Washington, D.C.
