M. Fillmore 2 Signed Books, Mexico & Russia (with Maps) from His Library
Signed Books

Two volumes of ?The Modern Traveller?, out of a ten-book series, from Millard Fillmore's library. Boston: Wells and Lilly (Late Wells & Lilly), 1830-1831. ?The Modern Traveller. A Popular Description, Geographical, Historical and Topographical, of the Various Countries of the Globe", Volumes VII (Second volume): Mexico and Guatimala (sic) and X: Russia. Both books have been signed ?Millard Fillmore? in pencil on the inside front cover. Millard Fillmore has also penned ?G-3? in ink on each title page, indicating library shelf location. Each eighteenmo. Volume VII is vi, 302pp and has three illustrated plates. Volume X is iv, 315pp and has two plates and two foldout maps. Brown calf binding has heavy wear, rubbing, scratching, and chipping, with worn and cracked hinges. The covers have become detached from the spine and have been repaired with archival tape. Foxing to the inside covers and on free-end papers and flyleaves, some of which have separated from the binding. Fillmore's signatures are light to faint. Some tearing and separations to the foldout maps. The text block is sound, with light to moderate toning to internal pages.

Millard Fillmore's administration came into power shortly after the Mexican-American War, and it is often overlooked how Fillmore's policies avoided a possible reignition of tensions with Mexico. Trying to overcome the loss of goodwill in Latin America generated by the Mexican War, he restored diplomatic peace with Mexico and sought to resolve several disputes left over from the Taylor administration, including the Texas-New Mexico border crisis. He also laid the groundwork for the Gadsden Treaty, which would be signed during Pierce's presidency.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
