The origin of the M1 goes back to the Turbo Concept created for the 1972 Munich Olympics. Initially, the car had to show the technological level reached by the German automotive industry after the difficult period of the 60s. The design was curated by Paul Bracq (formerly maker of the TGV train), who took up the line of Italian sports cars by building a wedge-shaped mid-engine vehicle. The concept car was equipped with a turbo 2.0 engine derived from 2002 with a four-speed manual gearbox. The vehicle was equipped with a radar system that alerted the driver of the proximity of another vehicles.
The 5 Series was presented at the 1972 Frankfurt Motor Show and was the model that inaugurated the new naming system used by BMW: based from that moment on three digits, the first of which indicates the market's range. Errata corrige: Lot in process to be declared of Italian cultural heritage.
