First French edition of a description of St Kilda that was read and praised by Dr Johnson before his journey through the Hebrides. As usual, this volume also includes ‘Relation du nouvel archipel septentrional’ by Jacob von Staehlin (1709-1785) and ‘Récit des Aventures singulières de quatre voyageurs Russes’ by P. L. Le Roy (1699-1774), appended to Macaulay’s text.
3 parts in one volume, 12mo (164 x 95mm). Contemporary mottled half calf, spine gilt, decorative endpapers (extremities faintly rubbed). Provenance: Fürstlich-Starhemberg, Schloss Eferding (ink stamp) – faded pencil shelfmark.
