SUN MASK - BOBO / BURKINA FASO

The Bobo believe in a god Wuro, creator of the earth and animals.
The first man created was a blacksmith who asked for a companion.
This is how the Bobo or cultivator was designed. Then Wuro withdrew, leaving men with three sons: Dwo, responsible for helping man, Soxo, the spirit of wild nature and the bush and Kwere, a figure of his power who punishes with lightning.
In every village, altars were erected to them.

Blacksmiths were the priests of the cult of Dwo.
The spirits of the bush and the ancestors, notably the founder of the village, received sacrifices. Dwo was the intermediary between men and the creator.

Living in a country of dry savannah where the harvest depends on the arrival of the rains, the Bobo have instituted a series of purification rituals to reconcile nature, which is fundamentally good for them unlike the ambivalence it possesses for others. other ethnic groups.

As it is appropriate to repair the errors of men, masks have the essential function of erasing evil and reinstating the balance given by God between the sun, the earth and the rain.

At the end of the dry season and before the resumption of agricultural work, purification ceremonies take place with the leaf masks which embody Dwo, the fiber masks and those of wood which represent the protective spirits of the village: warthog, male buffalo with flat horns, rooster whose crest is perpendicular to the face, toucan, fish, antelope, snake and hawk.
All embody the forces of fertility, fecundity and growth.

The very geometric sun masks have several reading levels, accessible depending on the grade of the initiate.
