MALCOLM, John, Col. (1769–1833). The History of Persia…Containing an Account of the Religion, Government, Usages, Character of the Inhabitants of that Kingdom. London: James Moyes for John Murray and Longman and Co., 1840. 2 volumes, 4to (318 x 248 mm). Half–titles, large folding map in Volume I (small tear to inner margin, few tiny repairs at folds verso), 22 engraved plates (marginal foxing with offsetting to text from plates). Contemporary half red morocco, marbled sides, 6 compartments with 5 raised bands gilt, two morocco lettering–pieces gilt, compartments with gilt centerpieces and cornerpieces framed in gilt fillets, gilt–lettered shelving numbers near foot, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers (extremities rubbed). Provenance: Sarah Clark (early signature on titles with her maiden name crossed out). FIRST EDITION, LARGE PAPER COPY, based on Malcolm’s three diplomatic visits to Persia with the most valuable contribution being its detailed description of the contemporary Qajar dynasty from its outset.
