MANTEL SET

Louis Philippe, Paris ca. 1840, signed Drovin.

Oak and lime, carved, and bronze, dark patinated and gilt. Comprising a mantel clock and two candelabras. Clock dial with medallion and monogram AO. Small Parisian movement, striking the 1/2-hour on bell. Pendulum missing. The candelabras feature figures of angels carrying the celestial and the terrestrial globe on a bell-shaped plinth, carved with an oval medallion, monogram AO. Blossom-shaped nozzles and drip pans. Key missing.

Candelabras H 58 cm. Mantel clock 77 cm.

Small cracks and minimal losses.

The monogram 'AO' refers to a member of the French Royal Family from the House of Orléans. These are the initials of Adélaïde d'Orléans (1777-1847), daughter of Louis-Philippe II Joseph de Bourbon, Duke of Orléans (1747-1793) & Louise-Marie-Adélaïde de Bourbon-Penthièvre (1753-1821). With their twin sister, Mademoiselle d'Orléans, deceased in childhood, they are the youngest sisters of the last French King, Louis-Philippe I d'Orléans (1773-1850).
It is no longer possible to prove whether the present set was actually commissioned by Adélaïde d'Orléans or whether the watchmaker gave it to her as a gift. However, it is reasonable to assume that the mantel set came into the possession of the noblewoman at the earliest in 1824 or later. This date corresponds with her move to Randan Castle, which was completely renovated on her behalf. After the extensive renovation, numerous orders for decorating the rooms were placed.
