MANUEL MARÍN

[ translate ]

(Cieza 1942 - 2007 Málaga)
Mobile. 1985.
Metall, black painted.
With the incised signature: M. Marin.
Lenght, app. 150 cm.

Provenance: From the artist's estate.

The artist Manuel Marin was born in Cieza in Spain in 1942. He grew up in the world of bullfighting and for several years took part himself in the competitions. At the age of 20 he decided to make a radical break, moved to London and began working in a gallery. There he met the English sculptor Henry Moore, who hired him as assistant for the production of his bronze sculptures. In 1964 he moved to New York. After working as a restorer in a gallery, Marin opened his own gallery, “The American Indian Art Gallery”, through which he got to know artists such as Andy Warhol, Robert Indiana and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
After these experiences, Manuel Marin began his own artistic career in 1969. The knowledge he had acquired on sculpture and the numerous encounters with artists formed the basis of this decision. The power of movement within space interested him and hence kinetic art and one of its most important exponents - Alexander Calder. In 1970 he had his first exhibition. He is known for his brightly coloured and asymmetrical mobiles.
The piece presented here is a typical example of his work. The multi-part mobile moves slowly; each element is characterised by its own speed. His mobiles appear to dance in the air according to their own choreography. It vividly combines the principles of kinetic art: to show movement in art and to depict the movement in its three-dimensional nature.
