Description:

[MAP-1983 NEW YORK PRIDE PARADE]
The Official 1983 National Gay Task Force Guide Map of Manhattan. New York: David James Press, 1983. Souvenir edition printed for Pride Day, 26 June 1983. Printed folding pamphlet with a map of Manhattan surrounded by ads to one side and ads, a map legend, telephone numbers and editorial remarks to the other. The front panel with a line drawing of men and women carrying signs in the Pride Day parade by East Village Enterprises. The pamphlet opens to 23 3/4 x 18 inches (60 x 46 cm). Minor handling but fine overall.

A rare map issued to coincide with the annual Gay Pride Day activities on Sunday, June 26th, 1983. The map extends from lower Manhattan to 86th Street and indicates dozens of points of interest. In the editorial remarks from Virginia Apuzzo, Executive Director of the National Gay Task Force, it is noted that the hope is for the map to "de-mystify" the city and invites all to participate in Pride Day which "promises to be the most important in many years. The Frustration we all feel about the AIDS crisis makes it most important that ALL gay people turn out." Noting that 1983 was the tenth anniversary of the founding of the National Gay Task Force, Apuzzo writes that "our second decade will be a time of accelerated growth for our movement." The ads and directory offer Manhattan stores, bars, roommate services and other locations, several of which remain to this day. The map is scarce with only a few institutional holdings located.
