London, England, Lambeth Palace. Johannes Kip, Lambeth, His Grace the Lord Archbishop of Canterburys Pallace / Lambeth la Maison de l'Archevesque de Canterbury, 1697 (dated). Black & White. This scarce and magnificent view depicts Lambeth Palace along the Thames. It renders the palace's architecture and surrounding gardens and grounds in exquisite detail. In the foreground, several vessels pass through the river. The distinctive London skyline appears in the distance. Drawn by Leonard Knyff and engraved by Johannes Kip. Although the coat of arms at the bottom is dated 1697, the engraving was published in either Britannia Illustrata (1708) or its expanded reprint Le Nouveau Theatre de la Grande Bretagne. In these groundbreaking works, Knyff and Kip captured the architecture of palaces and the changing style of English country houses, gardens, and parks following the "Glorious Revolution" of 1688.
Dimensions: 18.9 x 12.8 in
Condition Report: A crisp impression on a bright sheet. The centerfold has been reinforced with archival materials. In the blank margins, there are some short edge tears that have been closed with archival materials on verso and some light soiling. Grade: A
