U.S. Coast Survey, Huntington Bay Founded Upon a Trigonometrical Survey Under the Direction of F.R. Hassler, Superintendent of the Survey of the Coast of the United States, 1849 (dated). Black & White. This detailed coastal chart centers on Huntington Bay off the North Shore of Long Island. The chart is filled with navigational information, including depth soundings, bottom types, sailing directions, and notes on the tides. Lloyd's Neck, East Neck, Great Neck, Little Neck, and Eaton's Neck are all named. Centerport and Northport are located, and numerous harbors and beaches are identified. Along the coast is rich topographical detail. From the trigonometrical survey under the direction of F.R. Hassler, Superintendent of the Survey of the Coast of the United States. Triangulation by E. Blunt, topography by F.H. Gerdes, and hydrography under the command of G.S. Blake. Final reduction for engraving by J.B. Gluck; engraved by George G. Smith. This is a very early example printed on heavy paper and appears to have been a special copy presented to the "Pontifical States," as written in manuscript above the map. Also known as the Papal States, the Pontifical States were territories in Italy under the sovereign rule of the pope, originally established in the 8th century. The United States officially established diplomatic relations with the Pontifical States in August 1848, not long before this chart's publication date.
