MAP, Solar System, Doppelmayr/Homann

[ translate ]

Solar System. Doppelmayr/Homann, Theoria Planetarum Primariorum..., from Atlas Coelestis, 1729 (circa). Black & White. This fascinating chart depicts the planetary motions according to Copernicus and Kepler, who both shared heliocentric theories of the solar system. Unlike Copernicus, who believed that the planets had circular orbits, Kepler theorized that the planets had elliptical orbits. Kepler also theorized that there was a strong relationship between geometry and cosmology. Notes surrounding the diagrams explain Kepler's theories, as well as those of Ismael Bullialdus, Seth Ward, and Nicolaus Mercator (Kauffman).
Dimensions: 18.8 x 22.1 in
Condition Report: A nice impression on watermarked paper with light soiling, a crease at top left, and a few tiny fold separations that have been archivally repaired. There is a small amount of hand color in the right-hand sphere. Grade: B+
